Welcome!

These laws were real.

Hey Reader,

What if the fetus has rights that supersede a woman's right to die with dignity?

In A Ward of the State, that question isn’t theoretical. It’s where the story begins. And the scariest part is how little I had to invent.

The newest Substack article just went live. It breaks down the real-world laws that inspired the book, including Wisconsin’s Act 292, which allows the state to detain pregnant women without criminal charges. From there, it was easy to consider what might happen if fetal personhood became a legal designation before birth and if that designation allowed the state to maintain custody long after delivery.

But this isn’t just about policy. It’s about people.

Earlier this year, Adriana Smith was declared brain dead in Georgia. The state refused to remove life support because she was pregnant. Her mother called it torture. Her legal personhood ended. Fetal personhood replaced it.

“The most effective systems of control don’t announce themselves. They look like care. Until you try to say no.”
